John David Harsant
We are very sad to advise you of the death of Mr. John David Harsant who passed away peacefully on Sunday 17th July 2022 after being unwell for some time.
It's sad to think most of us won't recognise his name but, all of the past, present & future Club members owe a huge debt of gratitude to John & his pals, most notably Gerry Hargreaves & George Mitchell who, had the selfless vision in 1971 to create "Heswall Squash Racquets Club".
John, Gerry & George were the three original Club trustees in 1973 and they, with a small cohort of other like minded individuals, drove the planning & construction of the Club which subsequently opened it's doors in January1974.
In addition, John was Club Treasurer from 1973 - 1975 & Club President 1975 - 1977
The land was originally leased from Wirral Borough Council with the trustees completing the purchase of the Club grounds in 1984.
It's often overlooked just how incredibly lucky we are to have such an outstanding location for the Club, please just sit in the bar one summer's evening, with a drink in your hand, and take in the excellent view of the green field & magnificent, mature trees.
Former Club Secretary & two times President ('81 - '83 & '97 - '99) Paul Cuthbertson wrote;
I was sad to hear that John had died, I saw him only three or four weeks ago at the barbers in Lower Heswall, and we chatted.
He reminded me he was soon to be 93yrs young.
A long standing resident of Heswall, John was a member of Heswall Round Table, as was George Mitchell at the time Heswall Squash Racquets Club was embryonic.
A consulting actuary in the early 1960’s, John joined Duncan C. Fraser as a Partner, leaving the Liverpool firm in 1984, to set up his own practice with an office in Pensby.
Whilst not always a committee man, within the finance sub group, he introduced a number of friends, from the Liverpool banking and financial world. They guided and provided us with advice and subsequent funding to make the dream possible.
The family wishes it to be known that there will be a service at St Peter’s in Heswall on Tuesday 2nd August 2022 at 10.45 am.
Our sincere condolences are passed to his family.
Thank you John..... From the all the members of the Club that you helped to create.

Ken Wilson 1931 - 2021
It is with deep sadness we share the news that long standing & much loved Club member, Ken Wilson, passed away on 25th Dec 2021.
Ken was a member at Heswall Squash for over 30 yrs, joining in the late 1980's when his former club, The Constitution Club in Oxton, closed it's doors for the final time.
Instantly recognisable to many Club colleagues by his distinctive white hair, Ken continued playing regular games of racketball well into his late 80's.
Always competitive, Ken will be greatly missed by his regular opponents.
Everyone who knew Ken, or even just met him briefly, share the same opinions; he was quiet, kind, thoughtful, honest & genuinely, a true gentleman.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
for seasons 2019 - 2021

7:15pm for a prompt start at 7:30pm
Mens Team Squash 2021/22 season.
CALLING ALL SQUASH PLAYERS!
NOW IS THE TIME TO PLAY FOR THE WORLD FAMOUS HESWALL SQUASH CLUB!
The North West Counties Squash League (NWCSL) is back and the 2021/22 season is starting again on Thursday 23rd Sept.
Covid curtailed all team squash towards the end of the 2019/20 season so it is exciting to know the return is just round the corner.
However, with such a long lay off it is essential I know exactly who is interested in playing and how regularly. I have to submit our entry forms by 1st August and I want to make sure I enter enough teams that can be competitive and not spread ourselves too thin and have to beg people to make up the numbers each week.
For those who don't know, the teams play every Thursday night with matches starting at 7pm. Some fixtures are local and others can be as far afield as Crewe, Delamere and Alsager. There are 5 players in a team and you are ranked in order of ability from 1 to 5, playing your opponent's equivalent number (1v1, 2v2 etc). Afterwards a meal is provided by the home team and as a home player you will be expected to 'host' your opponent by buying them a drink or two - but you can draw the line if they ask for 5 pints and 3 double vodkas!
If you have never played team squash but have always fancied a go, or you are new to the club and wanting to be involved then now is the time to let me know!
You can contact me by email [email protected]
It would be handy to know if you plan to play regularly or just want to help out now and then. There are lots of divisions of varying ability so don't be shy or think you're not good enough, I will make sure everybody plays at the right level.
Also, if you were an existing team player in the 2019/20 season it would be great if you could let me know if you want to continue to play or not (if you haven't already). I appreciate circumstances may have changed for people over the last year or so.
I look forward to receiving floods of emails!

Club Update 16th July 2021
hi all
SHORT STORY:
Club fully reopens from the Monday 19th July (yay!)

EPILOGUE:
All of the above subject to last minute change (I guess you already knew that!)

Squash & Racketball return to full court play from 17th May 2021
The UK Government has announced that we will move to Step 3 of the COVID Spring Recovery plan on Monday 17 May and Sport England have confirmed that squash clubs and venues can reintroduce full court squash for adults and juniors.
Following the updated rules for indoor gyms and leisure facilities, squash clubs and venues are able to offer the following permitted activity:
What does this mean for HSRC?
Please continue to book courts and properly list your playing partners - this is essential for "Track & Trace" & Club admin.
Initially, we are keeping the "alternating court" system.
Proper ventilation is proven to reduce instances of infection so we feel this is vital for the safety of all Club members.
This will be kept under review as the official advice hangs and of course, we'll take court demand into full consideration.
Meanwhile, please do follow the hand sanitising and general safety rules.
Let's be honest, if you're a dirty type who can't be bothered to keep your hands clean, you need to take a good long look at yourself.
Changing & Showering.
The changing rooms & showers will be open again from the 17th.
Hopefully, the "alternate court" booking will significantly reduce the number of people using the changing at any one time.
Use common sense; maintain social distance, avoid chatting in groups and don't spend longer than absolutely necessary in the changing areas.
FINALLY....
The Club bar will reopen: initially Saturdays 5pm - 9pm & Sundays 6pm - 10pm
Sadly, we're unable to reopen fully until there is sufficient demand to ensure we cover operating costs.
Please do support your Club & remember: there is no Club without the support of the membership.
Stay safe & keep well.
Following the updated rules for indoor gyms and leisure facilities, squash clubs and venues are able to offer the following permitted activity:
- Players can get on court with multiple households and play full court squash e.g. best of five with tie-breaks, and singles and doubles (squash bubbles and modified versions not required). The maximum number of players on court allowed are 4 adults or children.
- Coach-led sessions can take place in any number (within the maximum venue capacity limit) but the maximum number of players on court allowed is 4 adults or 6 children. Coaches are allowed on court and are not included in the total number of players on court.
- Coaches can provide Out-of-School Setting activities to all children (6 max per court), with no restrictions on numbers.
- Spectators are allowed but MUST observe max of six people or two households as well as social distancing rules and wear face coverings.
- Indoor bar/restaurant/cafe areas are allowed to open, and must follow the current UK Government guidance.

Malcolm Willstrop
This is a personal message, I'm sorry if it's considered outside of my normal remit for the website.
I'm greatly saddened to read that Malcolm Willstrop has passed away.
Malcolm's contribution to the world of Squash was immense.
I was fortunate enough to meet & chat with Malcolm on many occasions around the country and at his base in Pontefract.
Many HSRC members will remember his visits to Heswall with fondness although, Malcolm was never a man to "pull his punches" when discussing the finer points of your game!
His dedication to, and knowledge of, the game was unparalleled.
Even if you've never heard of Malc, he'd helped to shape the modern game that we know and love by his tireless work with so many of the great players that we admire and try to emulate.
RIP Malcolm.

England Squash Update 03.03.21
- 03.03.21 England Squash continue to await detailed guidance from Sport England ahead of the return to play for indoor sports on 12th April. Once we receive the guidance and have taken the time to interpret what it means for squash clubs and venues, we'll update you. In the mean time, squash clubs and venues must remain closed until 12th April.
Lockdown Closure from 06/01/2021 - we will be back!
Is there anyway to do this other than by stating the bleedin’ obvious?
The National “lockdown” forces us to close our doors once again.
Of course, we’ll be right back as soon as we are legally allowed to reopen.
We do recognise that many people will find the coming month(s) very difficult; physically, mentally and financially.
Please don’t suffer in silence, keep talking to your friends, family, squash club buddies and even us on the Committee (I know, it’s a radical idea!)
We’re not just a Club, we are a family.
Even though you’re not able to play at present, the Club still needs your support.
If you’re able to renew your membership, your help is greatly appreciated as, without members, there will be no Club.
Stay safe, keep those around you safe and above all, keep in touch.

Club Closure - minimum 4 weeks from Thursday 5th Nov 2020
Dear all
Please read this extract from the official England Squash e-mail received 02/11/2020:
Clubs and venues to close this Thursday pending Parliamentary vote.
Following the UK Government’s proposal to introduce a four-week national lockdown, squash clubs and venues should prepare to close from this Thursday, 5 November to Wednesday, 2 December inclusive.
Please note, these lockdown measures are dependent upon a House of Commons vote this Wednesday, 4 November and should it pass, squash clubs and venues are likely to be ordered to close from Thursday. We will continue to seek advice from Sport England, DCMS and other partners, and will be in touch on Wednesday with guidance on the actions your club/venue should take.
Several MPs have raised objections about the closure of sports facilities and the likely, long term effects on the Nation's physical & mental health.
All of the clubs playing in the North West Counties Squash Leagues have signed a petition organised by Bowden Squash and it's been delivered to England Squash.
However, at present we have to assume that closure is our only option and to be prepared.
We hope that you all stay safe and well through the coming weeks.
Please be patient and we'll see you back on court very soon.

Yes, it's the Club reopening Jim, but not as we know it...*
OK... from Friday morning, 23rd Oct, the Club is once again officially "open"
You may have noticed that some of the conditions applicable to playing squash & racketball have changed once or twice recently.
So here goes....
At the moment, in the Merseyside / Liverpool City region, Tier 3 / DEFCON ONE zone, the following conditions apply:
Permitted activities are:
The full set of guidelines are here:
Our options were: keep the Club closed to all or, open to allow the limited activities listed above.
I think that we've made the right choice but we recognise it might not work for everyone.
If you've any comments or complaints, please email: [email protected]
Thanks once again for your patience & understanding!

Play Safe, Stay Safe, Keep Others Safe - updated 5th Oct 2020 -
Wirral is under new "local" restrictions.
Let's be clear about what this means for us all:
IF you meet up with someone (indoors or outdoors) who is NOT from your household, you are breaking the Law & could be liable for a fine or Police caution.
Currently, the Law states:
- £100 for the 1st offence, lowered to £50 if paid within 14 days
- £200 for the 2nd offence, doubling for each further offence up to a max of £3,200
Under these "local" restrictions, permissible squash / racketball activities are:
- Solo practice
- Household / support bubble activity
- Coach led individual sessions (with social distancing)
- Coach led household / support bubble sessions (with social distancing)
Please note: a "squash bubble" is NOT the same as a "support bubble"
Current Advice from England Squash - last updated 01/10/2020 (link below)
"For some areas there are exemptions around organised sport and physical activity within the local restrictions. You should always check your local guidance to see if these apply to your area. We encourage those in local lockdown areas to consider how they can contribute to reducing the spread of the virus locally"
This might include:
- Smaller squash bubbles so fewer households come into contact
- Reducing the frequency that players can change bubbles
- Where there are multiple players in a household, encourage them to be in the same bubble or only have one person from the household playing in a bubble at one time
- Additional monitoring to ensure the processes are being followed & social distancing is adhered too
- Coaches to take additional measures to protect themselves & players including minimising time on court and wearing face coverings.
Under the terms ES have agreed with the Department for Culture, Media and Sport "Full court squash within a squash bubble is considered formally organised activity, providing your Club has followed our steps on introducing squash bubbles".
The current guidelines from Wirral permit "formally organised activity" (link below)
So finally, the point of all this:
If you wish to play squash / racketball with other people who are NOT members of your own household* then you MUST:
Agree to the "Covid" rules confirming that you will follow ALL of the procedures.
Agree to the "bubble" rules confirming that you will follow ALL of the procedures.
Identify all of the bubble members to the Committee.
Always identify your playing partner when booking.
Always check-in on arrival at the Club (swipe your access card though the card reader next to the booking screen)
Stick with the safety protocols (yes, even the one way system)
Please Note: As from Monday 5th Oct, we shall cancel any court bookings you make if you have not agreed to follow the safety procedures.
Finally, If you have "accepted" the safety procedures but don't intend to follow them - please don't visit the Club.

England Squash announce phase 2 of their "Return to Play" plan!
From Tuesday 1 September squash clubs and venues in England are able to move to phase 2 allowing players to form ‘squash bubbles’ and play full-court squash, although modifications and additional hygiene measures will be required.
A squash bubble consists of a maximum of six players.
Players can only be part of one bubble at a time.
Players within the bubble can play full-court matches but with the following modifications and hygiene measures;
The Club must maintain all current processes around social distancing and the maximum number of people allowed in your club at any one time, as well as your already enhanced hygiene and cleaning processes.
What if a player in a bubble develops COVID-19 symptoms?
Example activities that can take place with squash bubbles

Players can only be part of one bubble at a time.
Players within the bubble can play full-court matches but with the following modifications and hygiene measures;
- Only two players on court at one time.
- Play best of three games.
- Play first to 11 points, sudden-death at 10-all.
- Use ‘Sides’ as a way to maintain social distancing throughout the warm-up.
- During each game, when the first player reaches six points, both players should wipe away excessive sweat, sanitise their hands and the ball. Repeat between games.
- The same player to serve / touch the ball during each half of a game, and at the halfway point, switch servers.
- Protective eyewear or visors are strongly recommended at all times.
- Players must not wipe their hands on the court walls.
- Players are not allowed to shout or raise their voice.
The Club must maintain all current processes around social distancing and the maximum number of people allowed in your club at any one time, as well as your already enhanced hygiene and cleaning processes.
What if a player in a bubble develops COVID-19 symptoms?
- Follow the England Squash guidance and your club’s protocol for members/players with COVID-19 symptoms.
- Players from the bubble that have been in contact with the symptomatic player within the seven days prior must self-isolate and undertake tests as per Government guidelines, even if they exhibit no symptoms themselves, until it has been determined whether or not the symptomatic player has tested positive or negative.
- Players within the bubble can resume play if the COVID-19 test proves negative.
Example activities that can take place with squash bubbles
- Box leagues - Players within a bubble can play full-court matches in a box league. Players can switch bubbles after seven days of socially distant squash, meaning players can move into different box leagues.
- Group coaching – coaching full-court play with players from the same bubble, with up to six players across three courts. (Further guidance for coaches to follow.)
- Casual / pay and play – players from within a squash bubble can play full-court matches
Further notes:
- Social distancing must be maintained off-court even within a squash bubble.
- Coaches must maintain social distancing from members/players at all times, and we strongly recommend wearing a face covering (unless undertaking strenuous physical exercise).

Returning to normal?
This week, my inbox has been groaning under the weight of an e-mail from Club member, Mrs Trellis from North Wales who poses the question:
"When will I be able to return to the Club bar for my customary sweet sherry & Cheesy Wotsits*?"
Well, the good news is that we are making plans for a slow, safe & steady, phased re-opening of the bar.
As you'll already know (because you always read these e-mails...) the bar has recently been repainted & the carpet professionally cleaned.
The "back of bar" area is undergoing a full "deep" clean later this week and a small (but dedicated) bunch of volunteers have carefully rearranged all of the furniture to ensure safe, distanced, seating to accomodate groups up to a max of four people.
We're putting together plans for safe movement around the Club, protocols for ordering & receiving drinks etc etc together with a set of safety guidelines that you will all, of course, be asked (and expected) to adhere to.
The safety of all Club members & staff is extremely important and even if you think you'll be "ok" we expect you to consider the wellbeing of all the other Club users and please, follow the guidelines.
Keep your eyes peeled for more information in the next week or two.
As for squash & racketball, well, y'know - no news yet. sowee...
Stay safe!
*other corn based snacks are available.

Just in case you were wondering..
We're working hard to get the bar ready to re-open but, before you get too excited, there is no set date just yet.
John W has been working extremely hard over the past few months and as well as dealing with the court refurbs, he's overseen a re-paint & facelift for the bar lounge area.
Jobs still on the "To-Do" list include: carpet cleaning & a final "deep" clean of the back bar service area.
We're looking at all the ways the area can operate safely, looking after the bar staff and of course, our lovely Club members.
So there you have it, probably not ideal. There's still a lot of unanswered questions and we're not going to like all of the answers to those questions but I'm sure we'll get through.
The Club IS "the members", so please do what you can to help and support.

Important Coronavirus update: Saturday 21st March 2020
Dear All
This will come as no surprise.
Further to the Government announcement yesterday, we are left with no alternative other than to, temporarily, close our doors.
As a Committee, we’ve e-mailed, debated, argued and listened to both medical and legal advice.
Together with the Government advice, England Squash have issued the following statement:
So there you have it, a double whammy of unpopular and inevitable.
Looking forward, we are planning to continue with our regular court maintenance programme during the closure.
We are also looking into giving the the bar & function area a “lick of paint & spruce up”
Hopefully that's some good news & something to look forward to for when we all return, hopefully in the not too distant future.
All I can say is: take care of yourselves, take care of your families, keep in touch with your “squash” mates and be kind to others.
If you’ve been affected by any of the issues raised in this e-mail or have any questions, drop us an e-mail

Important Coronavirus update 16th March 2020
Dear All
In light of recent events regarding Coronavirus (Covid-19) we must ask all club members to refrain from visiting the club if any of the following apply to you:
1. you've been to any of the affected countries in last 14 days
2. you've been in contact with someone diagnosed with or may have Coronavirus or
3. you have either or both of these symptoms:
a. a high temperature – you feel hot to touch on your chest or back
b. a new, continuous cough – this means you've started coughing repeatedly
Shortness of breath may also be regarded as a possible symptom although not currently listed as such on the www.nhs.uk website.
Further to this, we are very sad to announce that we have POSTPONED the upcoming Murder Mystery Evening (Friday 27th March)
This will most likely be rescheduled until November 2020, for those who’ve bought tickets, please hold onto them while we reassess the situation. Of course, you're free to ask for a refund should you wish.
Please ask Ged for details and we'll keep you updated on proposals to the rescheduled event ASAP.
The Welsh Squash League has been suspended and we are awaiting a decision on the NWCSL.
The Club Committee will be speaking with all the other Club users (Bridge, Yoga, Runners etc) and hopefully find workable solutions to the different problems that may arise with these groups.
We apologise for the inconvenience but want to do our best to keep all our members & visitors safe and well.
Take care out there, it's a jungle!

It's Club Tournament Time!!!
The entry lists are on the noticeboard opposite Court 2. ALL MEMBERS are welcome to join.
You may think "I'm not good enough, what's the point?" but you would be wrong! Even if you are drawn against one of the 'big guns' you could:
a) Gain valuable experience against a good player
or
b) Cause a major shock and go down in HSRC history! (Mike Beecham has to lose eventually!!)
This year there is the added bonus of the 'Plate' - a tournament comprising all players who get knocked out in the 1st round of the Squash Open. Two bites of the cherry - what's not to like!
There is a £2 entry fee per competition to cover the cost of trophy engraving. Please hand money to myself or Roy Finney. Alternatively you can leave it behind the bar FAO of me or Roy.
The tournaments are:
Squash Open
Squash Handicap
Squash Over 45s (ID will be checked if you look too youthful!)
Racketball Open
Racketball Handicap
Also there will be the ladies tournaments - see Jayne McGrath for more details.
Enter as many as you like. Closing dates for entries will be Saturday 18th January.
If you know you're not around then either DON'T enter or cancel your plans that night - I'd suggest the latter!
Finals night will be Saturday 25th April and all finals will be played that night.
Get it in your diaries now! It will be a fun night and the more people there the better.
So there you go. Roll up, roll up and make the 2020 tournaments the best ever!
Cheers,
Matt.

A Night At The Races - Friday 22 Nov at HSRC!
Heswall's John Williams wins "Special Recognition Award" at the 2019 Wirral Sports Awards!
It's the Sporting version of "The Oscars" (on Wirral...)
The Wirral Sports Forum's 55th Annual Wirral Sports Awards took place on Thursday 10th Oct at Hulme Hall in Port Sunlight.
The biggest and most successful yet, it was a fantastic night with a huge turnout and hosted by Ian Kennedy from BBC Radio Merseyside.
Highlight of the evening was our very own John Williams receiving a "Special Recognition" award for all the many years of invaluable, amazing and selfless work he's put into the Club which, of course, he continues to do "week in and week out".
John said "it's not just about one person, there are lots of people who put plenty of time into the Club behind the scenes, I'm just accepting this on behalf of all the volunteers that make HSRC such a great Club".
Unfortunately, John was unable to collect his award in person but as soon as Ged Clark heard there was a free buffet, he volunteered to stand-in.

"Online" court booking - a quick update....
The touchscreen terminal is due to be installed at the Club next & the system will be in admin mode only for a week or two and then "go live" a couple of weeks later so, keep your eyes on your e-mail inbox for notifications.
The change from paper to digital will take place overnight so don't be caught out!
Most of the current court booking rules will remain in place but there will be small but necessary & important changes.
All Club members should note that if you have not supplied an e-mail address to the Club then you won't get the info on how to book courts!!!

Recent damage to Court 3
VERY disappointed to find Court 3 in such a sorry state on Sunday morning (apparently first noticed on the evening of Wednesday 5th June)
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not wear ordinary, outdoor trainers or shoes that carry in dirt & crap from outside.
Also, if you find yourself on court with an opponent that isn't wearing the correct shoes, please have a polite word and tell them to STOP!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not wear ordinary, outdoor trainers or shoes that carry in dirt & crap from outside.
Also, if you find yourself on court with an opponent that isn't wearing the correct shoes, please have a polite word and tell them to STOP!
AN IMPORTANT REMINDER.
DO NOT OPEN THE DOOR ONTO A COURT WITHOUT FIRST:
1. CAREFULLY CHECKING THROUGH THE DOOR VIEWER
2. KNOCKING LOUDLY &
3. WAITING FOR A RESPONSE
A Club member was badly injured on court recently when the door was unexpectedly opened during a match.
The consequences of such an action could be extremely serious & I urge everyone in the Club to exercise care & attention.
While I'm at it, I may as well take this opportunity to remind you that, when on court, you should wear, clean, indoor sports shoes with non marking soles.
Please do not wear your playing shoes outdoors, this transfers dirt, mud & grit onto court which damages the playing surface but most importantly, can cause slips & injuries

Norman Watt 1927 - 2019
It is with deep sadness that I must pass on some terrible news.
Norman Watt, one of the Club's longest serving & hardest working members, recently passed away.
You may have heard that he had been quite ill for a week or two.
However, all of those who knew him fully expected to see him back at the Club sometime soon, such was Norman's tenacious character.
Unfortunately, it wasn't to be.
Norman's commitment & devotion to the Club was beyond all expectations.
Despite having been officially "retired" from Club duties, Norman continued to freely give his time & energy in more ways, behind the scenes, than many Club members will ever know.
Norman could be blunt, controversial, cantankerous, often rude yet funny, generous, hard working & always respected.
He made an enormous contribution to the Club over many years and will be greatly missed.
A card will be left behind the bar this evening should you wish to add your condolences to his wife, Lynn.
I shall forward any further details as I have them.
Regards
Steve Dodd

A card will be left behind the bar this evening should you wish to add your condolences to his wife, Lynn.
I shall forward any further details as I have them.

Steve Dodd

Framed Tesni Evans t-shirt
The club was looking great this morning with the early(ish) light streaming in. The newly framed Tesni Evans t-shirt looks fab in the sun and really zings under the spotlight on an evening.
Big thanks to HSRC member Claire from Framing Genius for, as usual, a top quality framing job.

Heswall Hall Community Trust are holding a Team Quiz Night on Saturday 23rd January
Posted on behalf of Heswall Hall Community Trust....
Could you get a 6 person team together for a quiz at Heswall Hall on Saturday 20th January? Friends, neighbours, colleagues?
( Over 18s only)
Heswall Hall Community Trust are holding a Team Quiz Night on Saturday 23rd January from 7.30 pm. It’s an ideal opportunity for a fun night out with family, friends or work colleagues at the start of the New Year. We have a pro quiz master and there’ll be prizes and a bar until 11.30pm ( waiter service to your table once the quiz begins).
All the proceeds from this event will go to support other Heswall Hall Community Trust events eg. Lunch Club, Tea Dance, Pre -school group, Matinee Cinema Club.
Please find below details of the evening and how to book and I’ve also attached a poster.
At just £10 for a table of 6 we think it’s a bargain. For more information and to book your table visit the webpage below

You'll have noticed a fair bit or work going on around the Club recently, yes I know it's been a bit of a "faff" but I doubt anyone would disagree with the statement 'it's all been worth it"!
Stay tuned, more improvements to follow soon....

Reconvened AGM will be held on 27/09/17 at 19:30
Dearest HRSC members,
The July AGM could not go ahead.
A poor turnout on the night meant that it was not quorate :-(
Hence, a reconvened AGM will be held on 27/09/17 at 19:30. An Agenda will be sent to all of the membership by email before that date.
If any members have items for the Agenda then they need to be proposed and seconded, and both parties will need to be present at the AGM.
Best wishes

PLEASE NOTE:
The Club car park will be closed to all vehicles from 0800hrs on Wednesday 16th August.
Answers to a couple of questions...
Why? Because it is being resurfaced!
Timescale ? They are hoping to have it done in 1 day - but may roll on into a second morning
How long does it take to dry ? Within a few hours.
To take foot traffic? Within a couple of hours.
To take vehicles ? About 6 hours to be sure and assuming they finish on day one (materials deliveries allowing) the car park will be ok to open up for use the next morning.
If they finish day on day 2, it will probably be a finish in the morning to complete works. If this is the case, we could open the car park from 4pm on day 2.
If you have any further questions, please drop us an e-mail and we'll answer them as soon as we are able.

HSRC Finals Night 2017 - Another Great Night at a Great Club!
Well!
We held another end of season night and had exciting and, I may say, skilled exhibitions of both squash and racketball.
The night started early with the juniors which was between Ollie Barton and Jack Whitfield. Jack showed the upper hand and won 3-0 but Ollie looked calm throughout and went for everything- Great to see the juniors coming through with improved games.
The Racket ball Handicap was between Roy Finney and Matt Stapledon and both fought hard for the win. Roy held his cool and won the game.
The Ladies final was between Gill Dabek and Lisa Bearsley. Gill having been out most of the season (think she's been busy with something or somebody!) took the game but Lisa, once again in a final, managed to hold her own. Gill had support from the family and the latest addition who will hopefully one day take her Mum's trophy!!
The men's over 45s was sneakily played on Court 3 which many didn't notice. This was between Chris Lee and Paul Smith. Again a hard fought game with Chris Lee winning.
The men's handicapped event was between Mike Corran and Andy McLaughlin. A hard fought game - literally with Mike Corran managing to win the game.
The final game of the night was the men's open final between Mike Beecham and Mark Prescott. Mark was trying to take Mike's crown but Mike once again dominated the court and held on to the trophy for a 10th year. Somebody has to take the trophy at some stage as the sign writer is getting a little board (not a spelling error but humour!!). A decade of dominance.
Susana Simoes cooked gourmet burgers in the kitchen and these went down well after the games. All the money raised on the sale of food (£55.50) will go to Cancer Research UK as the ladies are undertaking a 5K Pretty Muddy run on 2nd July 2017.

Laura Massaro becomes 1st English woman in 66yrs to win a second British Open title!
Laura Massaro and husband/coach, Danny have long been good friends of Heswall Squash so we'd like to congratulate Laura on her much deserved and epic SECOND British Open Title!
From the official Allam British Open website:
Massaro became the first Englishwoman since Janet Morgan in 1951 to lift the prestigious Allam British Open title on two occasions after she saw off Sarah Jane Perry in four games.
Massaro, the 2013 champion, and Perry were contesting the first female all-English British Open final since 1991 after they achieved respective semi-final wins over defending champion Nour El Sherbini and five-time winner Nicol David.
And it was 33-year-old Massaro who imposed her game plan on the encounter to seal the win by an 11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-6 scoreline.
“It’s just unbelievable,” said Massaro.
“When I won the British Open for the first time I was so happy. There was a little bit more pressure coming into today as I beat Nicol, who was World No.1, for my first title and at the time there was absolutely no pressure on me.
“I’m proud of myself for the week and for bouncing back because this has probably not been my best season. I’m just happy I managed to tough it out in the end and keep getting balls back and it paid off. It’s a little bit different because the first one was so special.”

HSRC #squashgirlscan events!
The Club recently hosted a very successful series of #squashgirlscan events.
A squash festival was held on 16 October 2016 and ladies and girls from all over Wirral were invited to join the Heswall Ladies for a taste of squash at our club.
Leading on from this we held a 6 week course which finished at the end of November to teach the basics of squash.
The whole experience has been delightful.
We didn't have a great turn out on the open day but following on from the day we had 6-8 players each week join in and improve as they went.
We have 6 new lady members from the event and they are now all well able to get on court and hit a ball well.
The new ladies will hopefully be joining in mix-ins and maybe even playing team squash.
The #squashgirlscan event and course was supported with money from England Squash - once again the ladies and Heswall Squash gave their time and effort without direct expense to the club.
Merry Christmas to all!!!

Best regards
Clare W

A boring list of exciting stuff wot has happened at da Club...
1. LED lighting upgrade around the Club.
You will probably have noticed that all of the court lighting is now finished but you may not have noticed that the remainder of the Club is getting brighter and more energy efficient!
There have been one or two issues with mis-matched colour temperature of some of the lights but most of the "snags" were fixed last week.
There are still one or two small things left to sort but we're nearly there...
2. A general note about the courts.
I hope that you've noticed the notices (!) next to the court doors reminding you about the use of suitable footwear.
Please make sure though you wear "indoor" sports shoes with non-marking soles when on court and that you only change into these once inside the club.
Please take note as grit and dirt from shoes worn outside (yes, even if you only pop out to make a phone call!) damages the courts.
Also, the dirt on court is a very real slip hazard which could cause you or someone else significant injury.
Please help us to look after your Club.
3. The Bar & Function Room
Don't forget that Club members get a preferential room hire rate for parties and celebrations.
You know it's a great space with a well stocked bar and friendly staff so don't forget to use it and give the Club some extra little support!
4. Casino Night - Saturday April 16th
What better way to support the Club AND have a great night out!
Come along and join in, pick up a bundle of "chips" for a fiver and gamble guilt free or just pop along for a pint and soak up etc atmosphere!
5. Final Night for the Club Competitions!
Put this in your diary now!
Saturday 23/03/16 from 1700hrs
THIS is the one not to miss, be part of it and support our top players!

I can see clearly now....
...that all of the courts have been upgraded to LED lighting!
If you've been on court (any court!) recently, you simply could not have failed to notice the vast improvement in the colour and brightness of the court lighting!
Watch out in the coming weeks for the rest of the Club (corridors, lounge, bar, changing rooms and exterior) to make the switch.
The Committee looked carefully at the expense of purchasing and fitting the LEDs (which is not inconsiderable) but given the vastly improved energy efficiency, we predict a ROI over the next 3 - 4 years which, as they say, is a "no brainer".
Not only that the quality of light is great but the environmental benefits are undisputed.
Of course, we'd love to hear your feedback but I would like to remind you that better lighting can't really improve your game, that's just down to practice I'm afraid.

An invitation to all at HSRC to get involved on Sports Relief Day - Friday 18th March 2016
Dear everyone!!!
The lovely folk at Heswall Tennis are planning to do a "bounce-athon" at the Tennis Club on Friday 18th March to raise money for Sports Relief!!
Arrival 4.30 onwards Will take a while to set everyone on court and a mini bounce practice.
Probably 5.30 - 6 for actual event
No parking on Quarry Rd East.
It's only £1 pp to take part with all proceeds to the Charity
We are hoping to add 50 or more players from the Squash Club to take part.
Half a court would be allocated and a Squash Club Banner to advertise where the players are from would be put on the netting at the back of the court. Participants only have to bounce the ball on the racket for 30 secs!!!!!!
The catch is, Heswall Tennis need 800, yes, 800 people as they have applied to the Guinness Book of Records to beat the World record set in China last year of 767 players. The application has been accepted and it looks like the BBC, local media and a famous person will now be involved.
All participants must register to qualify for the record, please can you help???

Visit from Burton Squash Club - Sat March 5th!
Hi all
A big group from Burton Squash Club are planning to visit Heswall on Saturday March 5th - it's one their regular, annual jaunts around the country to visit other Clubs
They're bringing 15 squash players and 8 racketball - 23 Total.
They plan to arrive at 14:00 to play squash and racketball bit of fun and get a sweat on.
Plan to finish at 17:00 then get in the bar and have some food and drinks.
We'd love to give them a warm HSRC welcome and it is open to ALL Ladies and Gents, ages & abilities!
I think they are expecting and wanting good numbers too.
Look forward to anyone who wants to be involved, email or speak with me at the Club.

George Mitchell 1935 - 2016
It is with deep sadness that we hear George Mitchell, one of Heswall Squash Club's founding members has passed away.
Here, John Williams shares some thoughts:
It is a great shame that many of you who read this obituary will not recognise the name or be unaware of the debt we owe to this man.
George was one of the founders of the club and was driven by the belief that a squash club in Heswall was needed to both serve the local community and provide a centre of excellence for Squash that would develop into a renowned club, well known for its aspiration to be the best.
Toward the end of the 1960's Squash was THE game to be playing , people were playing it in large numbers both for exercise and social interaction. The local leisure centre courts were constantly full and the members clubs that were offering squash were attached to Rugby clubs. It was George's vision that saw an opening for a dedicated Squash club and it was George (with other founding members) who brought this vision into reality by creating Heswall Squash Racquets Club in 1971.
He was a good squash player who was willing and able to foster the great game of squash by playing those who were aspiring to be better, always encouraging any player to believe in themselves but building a friendly social interaction within the club which, we believe, is still the essence of our great club.
During his later years he became less able to attend the club but was made a life member in January 2013 when he was able to come back and view a number of first team matches. He was proud and pleased that the club was still driving forward and maintaining the ideals of the clubs founders.
So thank you George..... From the all the members of the Club you helped to create.
Ann and family would like to invite you to join them for the funeral and celebration of the life of George Mitchell
The funeral will take place at St Mary's Church, Fford y Llan Treuddyn CH7 4LN at 10.45am on Monday 15th February, there is ample parking on the roads adjacent to the church.
This will be followed by a short ceremony at the Wrexham Crematorium, Pentre-Bychan Rd, Wrexham, Clwyd LL14 4EP starting at 12.00 midday.
We would like you to join us afterwards at the Beaufort Park Hotel, Mold, Flintshire CH7 6RQ, for a drink and a bite to eat.
We appreciate that it may not be possible for all of you to travel from the church to the crematorium so you are welcome to make your way to the 'Orchard Restaurant ' at the hotel directly after the church service if you would prefer. The family expect to arrive at the hotel at 1.00pm.
Family flowers only please .
Donations to the British Lung Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
All enquiries to HJ Williams & Sons, Haranfa, Cymau, Nr Wrexham LL11 5EU.

The LED Lighting upgrade to Court 2 is complete!
The Clue is in the title!
Next time you're down at the Club, pop in and have a look at the beautifully crisp, clean, bright & even lighting on Ct 2.
Apart from improving the whole squash experience the benefits of using LEDs are: reduced electricity consumption (& reduced costs of course) improved reliability & reduced maintenance costs.
The installation of LED lighting will be rolled out throughout the Club over the next few months so please be patient as there will be some disruption but it WILL be worth it!
Anyone that has done their homework will realise that there are costs involved in the purchase & installation of the LEDs but the benefits are clear & the saving in electricity costs will produce a return on investment within the next 3 - 4 years
PS: just in case you were wondering, better lighting will not improve your squash however, it will be easier to spot your mistakes!

Success for Heswall at the 2nd Merseyside One Day Graded Grand Prix Fun Competition!
Heswall were delighted to host the 2nd Merseyside One Day Graded Grand Prix Fun Competition last Sunday (29th November 2015). 20 children participated from a wide range of ages and levels.

They all put on very competitive performances and had some smashing matches. The results were:
Main Draw:

· Runner-up - Lois Stahler.
Mini Grade:
· Winner - Hannah Mason.
· Runners-up - Jyoti Rai and Jack Page.

Junior Graded Tournament at HSRC - 29th November
The next, North West Counties one day tournament is being held at Heswall Squash club on Sunday 29th November, 10-2.30pm.
This event is aimed at Mini-Squash and B Grade players mainly (but with there not being a team event this weekend, organisers hope to include some A Grade players)
Obviously, most of the courts will be in use so if you're a regular SMS (Sunday Morning Squasher) please be patient as I'm sure we are all keen to nurture young talent and see many more squash players coming up through the ranks (unfortunately, most of the youngsters will go on to beat us all eventually but I guess that's what they call progress!)
Please contact Peter Barton aka The Junior Guru if you have any questions

Obviously, most of the courts will be in use so if you're a regular SMS (Sunday Morning Squasher) please be patient as I'm sure we are all keen to nurture young talent and see many more squash players coming up through the ranks (unfortunately, most of the youngsters will go on to beat us all eventually but I guess that's what they call progress!)
Please contact Peter Barton aka The Junior Guru if you have any questions
Heswall Juniors at the National Squash Centre in Manchester!
Two juniors from Heswall played in the North-West Junior Closed competition last weekend (14th & 15th November)
Jack Whitfield (11) performed superbly in the U13s losing by the smallest of margins in the semi-final to the number 1 seed (ranked 5 in England): 11-9 11-13 11-9 13-11. Well done Jack!
Oliver Barton (9) also played very well in the U11s and took 7th place after being knocked out by the number 1 seed in the quarter final. In the 7/8th play-off, Ollie secured a fifth set 11-9 victory.
A great performance from Heswall Juniors.!
HSRC Junior sessions are going from strength to strength with numbers at the weekly training increasing every week.
The sessions are supported by a rotation of 12 active coaches who provide players with the skills to improve.
The sessions are on Sunday’s during term time from 5:30pm - 6:30pm.

2015-2016 Membership Renewals
Greetings to all of our lovely Club Members!
The good news: It was agreed at the AGM that there will be no increase in the membership fees for 2015-16. The fees for each category are shown on the renewal form and also on the Membership page.
Payment can be made in three ways.
All other categories are due in full by 1st September 2015.
If you are unable to make your payment by one of the above methods then you can send a cheque (payable to HSRC) to my address (please e-mail if you don't have it already).
If your name, address, email, telephone or mobile number has changed over the last year can you please complete and return the renewal slip either electronically or by leaving it behind the bar to help me keep the membership list up to date.
If you do not wish to renew, can you please let me know as soon as possible to prevent the issue of unnecessary reminders.
Don’t forget the new squash season is starting soon. Anyone interested in playing for the teams (ladies or gents) just let the team captains know asap. New team players are always sort. Spectators are always welcome too!
The Junior mix in is growing in numbers. Last year it was attended by a steady group of enthusiastic youngsters and we had a Junior team competing in the North West area for the first time in many years. We hope to encourage more juniors to take part when the sessions restart again early September on every Sunday between 5:30-6:30pm. Look out for details on the Junior notice board soon.
If you fancy something new then why not give racketball a go this year and join in a great bunch of regular players in the box leagues! It’s a fun game and a great alternative cardio workout. The club has spare racquets.
The Sunday night mix in from 7pm continues to thrive and my thanks go to the regulars for their help welcoming potential new members who go along for a trial. I always get positive feedback about their experience.
The Tuesday night fitness training is brilliantly run by Colin our fitness instructor and any member is welcome. Just turn up at Court 1 on a Tuesday evening at 6.45pm. This will also restart early September.
Don’t forget to hook up to the club Facebook and Twitter accounts for regular updates and properly check out this website.
Finally, it’s been great to see so many new members joining last year and I have really enjoyed meeting you all. As always, if you have any queries about your membership or have problems with the enclosed then just drop me a line at my email address or give me a call because I’m always happy to help anytime.
Many thanks for your continued support.
Cheers

I've been asked to mention that the Club bar will no longer be opening on Bank Holidays.
Unfortunately, the bar is rarely used on a Bank Hol therefore, the Committee feels it's a sensible decision.
However, you can help the Club by visiting the bar more often, drinking more alcohol & eating more pork scratchings* every other night of the year...
Don't forget, if you do have any great ideas on how to get the bar throbbing with customers (or any other great ideas to help the Club) come & join us on the Committee and help get things moving!
Please e-mail [email protected] if you'd like to get involved.
* other salted, savoury bar snacks are available

HSRC AGM update!
Good morning everyone!
Many, many thanks to all of the intrepid souls who: set the recorder for Corrie & Holby, got out of the house and made it to the Club, in person, for the AGM.
It was great to see so many Members in the bar for the meeting & for the election of a new Club President which, drew a very respectable number of votes.
In a nutshell, our new Club president is ....
Clare Wilson
Congratulations to Clare & sincere thanks to Steve Griffiths who was brave & bold enough to put his name forward as a candidate.
Both Steve & Clare deserve our gratitude as they certainly both have the best interests of the Club at heart & are ready, willing & able to "step up" to make positive contributions.
HUGE thanks also to the outgoing Committee members: Julie Griffiths, Rob Burgess & Tony Marks. They have all worked so hard & tirelessly, simply helping to keep the Club going on day to day basis.
There have been difficult times recruiting Committee members in the past but it's so encouraging to see a renewed enthusiasm as we hope to move the Club forward.
The existing Committee members have been joined by Susana Simoes, Peter Barton & Steve Batty.
The new Club committee comprises:
Clare Wilson (President)Bryan Douglas Dala (Treasurer)Julie Kennedy (Membership)John Williams (Bar & Functions)Andy McLaughlin (Men's Captain)Susana Simoes (Ladies' Captain)Peter Barton (Junior Squash Development Guru)Steve Batty (Media, Marketing & PR)
Steve Dodd (Club Secretary)
John Williams & Julie Griffiths will also look after "House & Maintenance" until a suitable volunteer comes forward - there is someone out there, c'mon, don't be shy!
Don't forget that there is also a small group of volunteers behind the scenes that "don't do Committees" but still help around the Club, day in & day out - always room for more helpers though if you are able to pitch in!
My best regards
Steve
PS: apologies if I've missed anything or anyone, I'm typing this before my breakfast & not yet fully awake.... :-)

The last days of summer...
As the last few rays of summer sunshine disappear behind the horizon and the new squash season beckons, many of you will have noticed the excellent refurbishment work on both the Ladies & Gents toilets AND all of the courts.
Congrats to John W who managed all the work programmes efficiently and with fuss!
Sadly, we've lost a few players to foreign climes, new jobs, injury etc etc but despite this the Club is in great shape and is continuing to attract new members and in particular the Ladies' are now in the position of fielding 3 teams next season!
As the demand for court bookings will surely grow in the next few weeks, please ensure that you use the sticker system when booking from 1745 onwards.
Stickers are bought for £1 from the machine (next to the lights machines) and you may reclaim your quid from the bar, on the night, after you've played.
If you just write your name & do not use a sticker, any member is entitled to claim the court by applying a sticker over your name - so please do try and stick to the system!
Also, given the recent court refurbishment please do ensure that you wear indoor sports shoes (that you only wear, indoors!) with NON MARKING soles as a number of courts have already been badly marked by inappropriate footwear.
On a positive note, we've some great social event planned in the run up to Christmas so make sure you are subscribed to our twitter feed and Facebook group.
Good luck for the approaching season & let's keep our great Club the best in the North West!
Toodle pip!
Steve
PS: Don't forget that Heswall Squash have negotiated an additional 5% discount (with free, next day delivery on orders over £35) on sports kit from PDH Sports - see the Members' Only section on the website for more details
PPS: As ever, we are always looking for new ideas &, most importantly, help from Members to keep the Club progressing- so get involved, it's your Club!

Racketball - here's what one of our Squash players had to say...
Fantastic game!
I've been playing for about 18 months, thinking that my squash career was coming to an end - but no, my knees now let me play both!
The beauty is, that in squash, someone a chunk better than you can stuff you 27 - 0 but in racketball you can still make a go of it and both get something out of it.
Some more of you should give it a go it's definitely NOT instead of squash, it AS WELL!

The Over 45s Final - Chris or Roy???
Hi all,
Please find Presidents report on the final played last night - back to his old best.
The final of the over 45’s was played last night, a week before finals night as I suspect that Chris Lee has to be back at school. Entry to the over 45’s is by self certification and I have my concerns about the age of Chris. There are certainly no outwards signs of age, no grey hair, no receding hairline, no belly over hang. As marker I quizzed him before the match. Chris ‘How many florins in a guinea?’, ‘What was on the back of a 3d coin’. He had obviously done his homework. But there was a slight hesitation when I asked him what year he was born? I shall be recommending at the next committee meeting that we introduce DNA profiling before the next comp as I suspect there could be a rash of underage players seeing the over 45’s comp as their best chance of end of season silverware as Mike Beecham looks set to dominate the Men’s Open for years to come.
Anyway back to the match. Played before an expectant crowd of 4 plus the marker, the game got underway. Roy overcome some serious competition to reach the final. Bye, walk over and a lame Tony Marks in the semi. He was trying to replicate the success of his son, Sam, who had won the handicap comp in his first year of membership. Roy took an early lead, 2:0 in the opening exchanging, his touch and boosts keeping Chris at bay. But the superior movement, speed and consistent length of Chris eventually proving too much with Chris winning the opening set 9:2. The pattern of the 2nd set was much the same, Roy varied the lines of attack with initial success but Chris soon adapted his own game to cope and despite considerable resistance from Roy, Chris won the 2nd set, 9:4.
The 3rd set was pretty much a procession, Chris had too much in his locker. Chris quickly had Championship point. Roy won the point but eventually lost the battle, Chris running out 9:1. Roy put in a skillful, battling performance but was always up against it.
Chris was a worthy winner of the over 45’s Comp. But I suspect that in his lab at Clatterbridge Hospital, Chris may be working with monkey glands or he is moonlighting at L’Oreal...because he’s worth it.
Well played Chris and Roy and thank you to all who entered.
This was just a warm up to finals night and I hope the turn out is better, to be fair you will have had slightly more notice.
Regards,
Andy Mc

On personal level, the amassed spectators (4) for the Dodd/Jones racketball game were greatly amused as Jones beat the crap out of a bemused & exhausted looking Dodd - next time Alan, next time...
2. Volunteers required for our next Club cleaning session – Saturday 17th May at 10:00.
DON'T all run for the hills! What's two hours out of your life? Not a lot really AND you get the pleasure of keeping your brilliant Club spick 'n' span.
Please e-mail [email protected] if you're able to come along - tea & biccies provided!
3. AGM set for Wed 25 June, starting at 1900hrs.
What more do you need to know?
40? yes, 40! Our Club is 40 years old this year!
Calling all Club members & associate members!!!
Get yourselves down to the Club on: Friday 14th February from approx 1930hrs to celebrate our totes amazeballs (I've no idea what that means I'm just trying to address the younger Club members) 40th Anniversary!
It'll be an action packed affair with: The 100 Club Draw, Quiz and (providing you add your name to the list at the bar in advance) a free pie!
On top of that, we have the services of THE NORMAN ROY ORCHESTRA, a traditional dance band with soloists, there will be 8 players in the band. They have agreed to play 2 sets, 8.00pm to 8.45pm and 10.00pm to 10.45pm.
They are great to listen to and great to dance to - but the latter is not compulsory!
There is no cost to the club & no entrance charge - where else would you get a night like this?
Come and celebrate the anniversary of YOUR brilliant Club, 40 years young, still going strong & probably THE best Squash Club in the North West.
What's not to like!

Get your names down for the 2014 Club Comps!
Hi all,
Club comps are up and need your names!
Rules will be the same as always and matches must be played.
It should be exciting and fun.
I would like to see everyone getting involved after all this is a club competition so please, please get your names down.
Finals night last year was great and there is absolutely no reason you can not make a final - the handicap is completely open and anyone can win - look at Rich Mc last year.
The sheets are behind court 2 and fees are;
£3 for one comp
£5 for two comp
£6 for three comp
These fees are not a money making scheme but contribute to (not cover) the engraving and boards.
Finals night will be early April and so we need names up early to set up the fixtures and have matches played early so we are ready for finals.
Last Entry for competition will be Wednesday 19th (2014) February so please get your names down so we can progress.
Rules are below and will be printed once fixtures go out.
Opens - Men’s and over 45
Usual Thursday Scoring and rules apply:
o Best of 5 games
o English scoring up to 9 and at 8/8 the option of 1 or 2
Winner moves on to the next round
The top play is ultimately responsible for organising the game. If games are not played in time the bottom player will automatically go through.
No cheating on court be honest
Markers are not included other than finals night (Finals Night DATE TO BE CONFIRMED)
You can arrange a mutual marker if both players agree
Any complaints, this could be in any manner – cheating, court manner, etc will be investigated.
H’cap
Different game :
o Best of 3 games
o American Scoring
o First to 15
H’cap is based on my decision any queries please contact myself (details below) no changes will be made once games have commenced. The H’cap is for the competition
The net score is to be used. No one starts on plus i.e. the weaker player starts on 0 and the stronger player is on – xx.
i.e James T (-5) and Matt Marks (+20) will be as Matt starts on 0 and James on -25
Every point counts in American scoring so points are gained on both players serve.
The h’cap is the same on every game i.e. in a match the h’cap is held on all three games it does not differ or stop.
All other rules as above apply
Good luck guys and please dont wait round it would be sad to miss you chance to be club number 1.

"Mountains For Mia" Fundraising Evening.
A very big "Thank You" to all who attended the Laura Massaro squash event & "Mountains For Mia" fundraiser at the end of last season...
Due to your amazing enthusiasm & generosity, we were able to donate a staggering £1000 to the "Mountains For Mia" appeal.
This money will be used by Mia to part finance a sophisticated "eye gaze" communication system which allows Mia to spell out words on a computer screen.
You can find out more about Mia and her struggle with "Locked-In Syndrome" here:

This event was organised by the ever wonderful & energetic Jools G & generously sponsored by Conlons Opticians <<www.conlons.co.uk>>

Update on Sports Hub Heswall
The Hub sports development was approved by Wirral Council last Thursday.
There is now a 21 day period when the Dept of the Environment can object to the plan. This is a statutory protocol because of the scale of the development and it is on the green belt. Further delay is not anticipated as there have been no objections raised to the development.
The Committee would like to thank Bob McLaughlin for his work in getting the development to this stage.
I suppose this is when the hard work starts as we try to raise the finances to bring the development into reality. If any members have experience in raising finance and fund raising could they get in touch with Bob McLaughlin direct or through the committee.
Bob will be giving a short presentation at the EGM on Wednesday November 13th.

Laura Massaro to visit Heswall!
Laura Massaro, currently No.2 in the WISPA World rankings, is coming to Heswall!!!
Laura will be at the Club on Saturday 26th October from approx. 6:30pm and will be playing an exhibition game with on of our own Club players & on hand later to answer your questions.
Many of you will remember what a great evening Laura's last visit was and of course she'll be accompanied by her Coach & husband, Danny who also ran very popular courses at the Club a few years ago.
All in all it will be a great evening!
Tickets for the event are just £5 and also automatically enter you into the prize raffle!
The raffle prizes are worth in excess of £500 and all profit from the evening is being donated to the "Mountains for Mia" fund in support of Mia Austin.
In November 2009, Mia, aged just 21 years, suffered a devastating stroke. At first, thoughts were focused on whether Mia would survive the weekend. Against the odds, Mia did survive, however this has left her paralysed from the neck down, unable to speak or move her limbs - a condition known as Locked-In Syndrome.
You can find out more about Mia and Locked-In Syndrome here:

The Bad
Membership fees for the 2013/2014 season are now due.
If you've already paid, you deserve a medal but, if you haven't......
Well, you know who you are!
Please help to keep your Club running smoothly and dig into those pockets right away!
The Ugly
As previously mentioned, there have been a lot of complaints about courts being booked and not used.*
This is a real problem as it not only causes bad feeling amongst members who are unable to book courts at busy times but the Club suffers a significant loss of income.
The Club will therefore be reintroducing the stamp booking system over the peak period.
Peak period is any court booked from 5:45PM until 8:00PM, Monday to Friday.
If a court is reserved with just a name and no stamp between these times, a player can take the slot by buying a stamp and applying the stamp over the written name.
Stamps are available from the machine (next to the the telephone in reception) and cost £1.
The £1 can be reclaimed from the bar ON THE NIGHT only.
Also, between these time a player cannot book 2 courts.
Please help to keep the Club running smoothly and get on board with these necessary changes, the changes will apply from Monday 30th Sept so why not just start now?
* If you want to know who has complained, put a £10 note into an envelope and mark it "For the attention of Steve Dodd" and leave it behind the bar. If I get enough tenners then I shall post the names on the Club website.
PHEW!
What a lot of stuff to cover but for now, that's all folks!
with love from
your friendly web guru

Offers, Deals & Discounts for HSRC Members.
Have you ever bought something or had some work done & the next week met someone at the squash club who says "I could've done that for you"?
No? Well it's a possible scenario!!!
Anyhow, to encourage a bit more interaction between club members, we've tidied up the noticeboard next to Court 1 and we'd like it to become a sort of "squash club services directory".
If you're a club member with a business or service that may be of interest to other club members (and I stress, club members only) please feel free to post a notice on the board.
There are five rules:
1. You must be a paid up club member to post an "ad"
2. You must be prepared to offer a real discount to your squash club buddies
3. Your "ad" should be no larger than A4
4. Nothing rude or offensive
5. No posting on behalf of any other business or organisation (unless you work for them & comply with rules 1, 2, 3 & 4)
We might make up more rules depending on what happens in the next few months...
Obviously, depending upon their profession, not everyone can directly offer a service eg: Nigel Parr did make a very generous offer but I'm not going to write it down here!
Let's make the most of the wealth of skills & talent that we have at HSRC!
Stop Press 1:
Gill Dabek would like to remind all Club members that she offers a discounted rate for physiotherapy!
Stop Press 2:
107 Dining Room in Heswall is offering a free bottle of house wine when four people dine (not strictly in the "rules" but I'm allowing this one on the basis of it's free wine - what's not to like!)
Please see the noticeboard for details!

CPR & Defibrillator Training evening.
Many thanks to everyone who attended our first, and hopefully not our last, basic CPR & Defibrillator training session.
Presented by the excellent Jane & Ali, the short presentation was packed with essential, life saving information. All the group were able to get hands on experience with the equipment supplied which featured the Zoll AED+ that the Club has and also several variants that you may well come across in your normal everyday life - people suffer cardiac arrest in other places too, not just on squash courts!
Obviously, the information is basic but if you act promptly and correctly then you can "buy" the victim many life saving minutes while you wait for the emergency services to arrive and that can make the difference between life & death.
The Zoll AED+ will be setup and situated in the Club in the next week or two, meanwhile, please ask if you would like a copy of the instructional DVD.
Watching the Zoll video could be the most boring 15 minutes of your life but the most valuable 15 minutes in somebody else's.
See the Gallery for a few snaps of the evening.

CPR & Defibrillator Training evening - Monday 8th July
Squash can be a brutal game.
Many of us complain of aching limbs, pulled muscles or sore joints but what happens if something goes seriously wrong? Could you respond? What about your squash partner?
Heswall Squash have recently purchased a Zoll AED+ for use in a cardiac arrest emergency & are able to offer a basic CPR & Defibrillator training course to a limited number of
Club members on Monday 8th July at 1930.
If you would like to attend, e-mail [email protected] but hurry, places are limited.
If you can't attend, rest assured that use of the Zoll AED+ is very simple to use and the device itself gives simple, straightforward spoken instructions & CPR coaching. The device can even tell the difference between a cardiac arrest & a heart attack - can you?
It will NOT deliver a shock to a healthy person, so don't be worried!
Copies of the instructional DVD are available on request so even taking 15minutes to watch the video could help save a life

MBE for the Club's very own Paul Cuthbertson
Breaking news form this weeks Wirral Globe!
An MBE has been awarded to Dr Paul James Randle Cuthbertson, chairman of Wirral Hospice St John's, for services to palliative care.
Anybody who knows Paul certainly won't be surprised about this news, if you think about the huge amount of time & effort he has put into the Club over the years, I'm amazed he's had time for anything else!
Congratulations & best wishes Paul from all at HSRC.

Plus, an extra big thanks to Jools G for organising the event, getting the materials delivered, shovellin' gravel, making tea, supplying biscuits AND taking the picture.

The Liquorice Allstars Party night!
The Box League Handicap Finale...
A great night & a closely fought battle.
Paul Goddard took the 1st game with some lovely little boasts.
Kev Ferguson started reading more of Paul's game in the second and nipped in to make it 1-1.
The final game was tooth and nail swinging advantage from one to the other but Kev finally pushed through with the win.
Excellent close game to watch!
Congrats to both players and thanks to Derek for running it superbly again:)

The 100 Club Draw......
Hi
The draw last night with the New Balls had the desired effect for one person at least with John Willy at last winning (only 3rd prize of £17 but just in time for his holidays!)
Sadly disproving the old balls theory of an advantage to some, who should pop up yet again with first prize but Seb with £62 followed by the other Gardiner, Paul with 2nd of £34. Complaints to Jen Munn who drew them.
The Roll Over was not won so up to £50 next month!
Amazingly that's 2 years of the draw now and congrats to all as you have raised £2000 for the club funds.
Big Winners this year with £221 are 'Lucky Seb', Norman with one big win £178 and Rich Stapledon with £157.
Yours truly, Nothing!!
So if your not in SIGN UP the more players the more prizes and its £1.15 per week. Forms behind court 2.
Cheers

Important: swipe cards & the front door access code.
Please note that the front door access code will cease to operate on 17th MARCH (this year!)
Please be patient and understanding as this action is necessary to maintain the integrity and security of our Club.
Jules will happily replace broken & non functioning cards or issue new ones, at no cost, up until that date.
However, after 17th March we shall enforce the £10.00 charge to replace lost or stolen cards.
Those of you with good memories will remember that this has been part of Club policy for at least 10 years although it hasn't always been strictly adhered to.
Jules will continue to exchange broken & non functioning cards at no cost.
PS: I do suggest that you offer to buy Jules a drink if she replaces your card as this does create quite a lot of extra work for her!
George Mitchell receives an honorary life membership.
Last night (31st Jan 2013) founder member George Mitchell received an honorary life membership at HSRC for services to the club.
George has been President, Men’s Teams Capt and was Club Champion in the first 2 years of the club.
Tony Marks, the current (and arguably, the most handsome) president said ‘It was an award long overdue. Without George we would have no club, all the players who have played at Heswall are part of the legacy that George, and the other original members, created in the early 70’s when their efforts built the club.’
George was joined by several of the old gang who had an enjoyable evening reminiscing and watching the current crop of younger players at the Club they started.

Old Git Scoops December 100 Club Roll Over
The prospect of big win for Xmas brought a few members out of the wodwork last night (15th December) for the 100 Club Draw but they were outdone by regular Attendee and everyones favourite OAP Norman who netted a Xmas Bonus of £170.
In the excitement momentarily forgetting his Scottish roots he proffered drinks all round. Cheers Norm.
The regular draw threw up a 1st time winner in the shape of Steve Clifton a long time member but rare player who won 1st prize of £63.
Rapidly becoming unpopular for winning too regularly was 2nd prize winner of £35 Alex KP.
3RD Prize of £18 went to another regular winner in Debbie Andrews.
There was a quiz after for the regulars and was won by Steve Griffiths and Julie (Risely) Mrs G being absent.
We had the highest number of balls in the bag last night with 3 new numbers entered so prize money is creeping up so join in for the new year S.O. and number list are behind court 2.
Merry Xmas

Unpaid Membership Fees :-(
An astonishing 50 people, yes FIFTY have not yet paid their membership fees for the 2012 - 2013 season.
It's fair to assume that some have good reason e.g. injury, retirement from squash, death etc.
Should you wish NOT to renew, please inform us & we will happily cancel the contract we have taken out on you.
The rest of you, who knows what your excuses are?
Please make the necessary arrangements as soon as possible or e-mail Jules [email protected] to discuss any issues that you may have regarding membership fees etc
Thanks in advance from all your mates at the Club who appreciate your support!
CEO of World Squash Association hails Seeing Double "a great success!"
CEO of The World Squash Association, M. Pourquoi Nolet, has recently heaped praise on Heswall Squash after, in his words, "the great success of the HSRC Seeing Double tournament"
Despite the unreliable marking, dangerous play, scandalous score tampering and highly suspect handicap system, sources close to HSRC President, Tony Marks, have confirmed rumours that "everybody appeared to have a good time", "Ged & Steve were in magnificent form" and "Pete Fisher is bloody dangerous (on a squash court)".
It is hoped that the event, generously sponsored by "Eye Design Heswall" will be repeated next year.
More news (and pictures) to follow soon!

The Summer Teams Champions - revealed!
Jayne, John, Peter & Steve - Champions!
Over 8 weeks, HSRC held a 'Summer Team' Squash event, to engage some new and old players in a more fun style setting, rather than the rigours of the usual winter team squash. There were a total of 6 teams with 4 in each team of mixed ages and abilities.
Team 1 "The Knight Riders" (Captained by the talented & handsome John Knight) were overall winners, with a total of 445 points.
Up till then team 6 had seemed invincible with 428 points but ultimately, they went soft at the end...
The winning team each received a bottle of wine, a winners medal and were treated to John's emotional & tear filled speech on the importance of team values, rigorous training, healthy living and of course, having a good team captain.
After the speeches, Peter stepped in to provide some much appreciated light relief and kept us entertained & amused while simultaneously insulting both the Irish (Dave) & Scottish (Mike) with his interpretation of local dialects.
Meanwhile Steve reflected on this being the first Squash medal he has ever won in a long yet undistinguished career and Jayne, looking slightly bewildered at the erratic behaviour of her team mates, sensibly kept a low profile.
All in all, a great night out!
Well done to everyone who joined in
Jools G (with minor embellishments, added without her consent...)

PS: Editor's Note:
Sincere thanks to Jools & Steve for organising the Comp and their dedication for turning out every week to keep an eye on us all.

The Heswall Squash Club Golf Tournament - 15/16 June 2012
The intrepid squash players made their way to Hawkstone Park for two days of golf and fun.
During the course of this event no animals were hurt but there was some flash photography and definitely no drinking by the finely tuned athletes.
The first day was a team competition – the rules of which were jus about understandable. What was quite clear was that Bob Mac, Ged Clark and Mark Griffiths won by a street. This was quickly followed by request for Mark to arrest himself for being a bandit. An emergency meeting of the handicap committee was held and he was cut by four shots (if only he could play squash that well).
Festivities in the evening had to include watching a game that England were playing in. I cannot think why. The weather forecast for the main championship on Saturday was dreadful but we all went out and were pleasantly surprised that we did not get soaked to the skin.
The scores were quite good (for some) with Ged Clark coming third on a count back and Byron Williams second, narrowly beaten by Ronnie Turner who has now won the prize three times and has the proud honour of organising the event next year.
The most exciting and complex prize was this time won by John Williams. John will proudly display the “duffer” prize if asked.

Hi All
The May draw took place last night after he club mix-in.Sean Holgate was given the honour of drawing the balls and under strict instructions not to pull out the number of a certain ex-president.
After much fumbling and shuffling of balls, what did he do ?? only pulled out Seb Gardiners number again for first prize. The amount of abuse he received was quite awful and he refused to draw any more numbers, wimp!.Seb still laughing all the way to the bank after last month is definately becoming public enemy no 1. with another £56
Dave O'Keefe took over from a deflated Sean and pulled Roger Hughes 2nd with £31 somebody called Burgess !! 3rd with £16 and netting the consolation Fiver to replace the suspended roll-over was first time winner Ged Clarke.
Best of luck next month to all except you know who.

"the ever popular Seb Gardiner"?
Hi All
The latest draw took place last night following the competition finals and we had our first DOUBLE WINNER on the night netting 1st and 2nd prizes getting both his balls drawn and pocketing £87 was the ever popular Seb Gardiner who is on a bit of a roll lately .
Another first time winner who picked up 3rd prize of £16 was Keith Jeffries.
Thanks to Mike Hoopers' partner for making the draw and not drawing Mikes' number.
Due to the holiday season approaching the must attend draw is being suspended until September and the regular draw will be made one Sunday night at the mix in during June/July/August.
During this time a fourth prize of £5 will be on offer and the must attend will be rolled over and be getting towards £100 for Septembers draw so try and bearound for the 2nd Friday in September.
Sadly not enough entrants for a quiz last night.
Don't forget Summer Teams start Thursday and are listed on the balcony.
Cheers

Summer Team Squash will start Thurs 17th May!
Yes, you read it right: Summer team Squash will start Thurs 17th May!
Please put your name , tel no. and approx standard of squash ( I don't know u all!) on the sign up list behind court 2 if you are interested. If there are enough players this could run for approx 6 weeks.
The idea is to have a mixed team of players of ability and sexes. The team could consist of 3 - 4 players, depending on how many sign up. I'll prob be a floating sub!
There wil be some sort of prize for the winning team.
Its good fun and some of you will get to play others you have not met or played B4.

How can you help the Club? Special meeting Wednesday 7th March 1830 @ HSRC
Since the EGM in January plans for the development of the club have been progressing.
We still need people to help make these plans a success - come and make your contribution!
The key areas of the redevelopment are:
Publicity - creating awareness of the redevelopment within the local
community/ the planning authorities and other project stakeholders
Planning - covenants/ planning applications
Finance - business plans
Fund raising - grants/ debentures/ gifts
Legal - club constitution/ legal agreements and documentation/ CASC status
There is a lot of work to do to fulfil our ambition.
We are asking for ALL members including the Runners to help with these tasks. There may be areas where you have 1st hand experience but the key requirement is enthusiasm.
We are having a meeting on Monday February 27th from 6:30 until 8:30 in the bar and if you are willing and able to help please try and attend. If you can't make that particular night then if you let me or Bob Mac know if you want to help and in which areas.
Many thanks
Tony Marks and Bob McLaughlin

Prof John receives Freedom of the City of Liverpool
Heswall Squash Club's much loved & revered (his words) Prof John Neoptolemos was honoured earlier this week to receive the Freedom of the City of Liverpool on behalf of his team at Liverpool Cancer Research Centre (UK).
The Liverpool Cancer Research UK Centre brings together scientists, doctors and nurses to boost key areas of research that will produce the greatest benefits for cancer patients in Liverpool, Merseyside and Cheshire. The Centre will also focus on tackling cancer in low income communities in the region, where more people die from the disease.
Further details can be found at: <<http://www.liverpoolcancercentre.org.uk/>>
Our congratulations to John and his team who may now graze their sheep anywhere in Liverpool without fear of arrest or prosecution.

The Racketball League "kicks" off!
Hi All
The racketball leagues will start 1st Feb and run to 31st march.
We have 13 players and are split them into 2 leagues: one of 7 players, one of 6 and of mixed standards that I know of.
After the first run is completed we'll will split the leagues into probably 3 divisions depending on results and we can then have promotion/relegation.
Details are on the board behind court 2 from Tuesday 31st Jan.

The Big Box League KO Final!
Last night saw the long awaited final of the Box League K-O and congratulations are in order for winner, Peter Barton.
A big mention for Julie Kennedy who saw of several males to reach the final but was undone by Peters hard hitting and speed around the court but it was a close call being 32-33 in the second game!
Alan Jones won 3rd place beating the improving Tom Green in a close fought match.
Bar vouchers of £20, £10 and £7.50 were awarded from the remains of the fund put up last year by our anonymous sponsor who deserves a vote of thanks - whoever he/she is!
Well done to all who played.

Christmas is coming! Part 2 - Sat Dec 10th 2011 -
Right Men and our Gill,
As the only response of non attendances has been Seb, Bob, Paul Smith and Stapo I expect to see the rest of you up there on Saturday 10th.
Tonys giving me some stick for not letting you all know exactly what is happening but he has told u its on Saturday 10th and im now telling you to get there for 16:30. This means its sorted be there and be ready. Have your kit a change and then your party hats on.
What the plan i hear you cry? Well its a squash team night out so we need a little squash to get it started and get those who dont like a drink out and about. Its a simple comp and i think once again we have set it so anyone can win. It will be doubles and were going to mix it so non team players go with the first then 5ths with 2nds and so on.
To follow we shall head up stairs to the function room for a little spread of food and a few little drinks, some of which are to be supplied by Mr Ian Williams. This will all be under the pleasure and moving atmosphere of our very own DJ Mr BP.
A little later once the food has settled and the drinks are flowing i think we shall have the special spread and ultimate finale to the evening.
I expect this should be about 21:00 this again will allow those who want to party on to head where they feel comfortable and those who think time is getting late to head where they please.
Should be fair enough and suitable for all.
Cheers
Andy
